LEARN TENKARA
What is Tenkara?
Tenkara is fly fishing, simplified
Tenkara is a traditional Japanese method of fly fishing. It uses a long, telescoping rod, a line attached to the tip, and a fly. No reel. No line management. No pile of gear to sort out before you can start fishing.
That is the whole setup. Rod, line, fly. You extend the rod, tie on a fly, and fish.
ORIGIN
Where it comes from
Tenkara has been practiced in the mountain streams of Japan for hundreds of years. It was the method of working fishermen who needed to catch fish to eat and sell, so it evolved to be practical: light, fast to set up, and precise in small water.
It works just as well here if not better. The USA has some of the most diverse fishing situations of any country and we have used Tenkara in pretty much all of them. The mountain streams and creeks are the same kind of water tenkara was made for. But we also have alpine lakes, bigger rivers, ponds, where we can use tenkara rods and it works great.
BENEFITS
Why fish tenkara?
Less gear. More time on the water
-
Simple to learn
With no reel and a fixed line, there are fewer moving parts between you and the fish. Most people are casting well enough to catch fish on their first day.
-
It is precise
The long rod and light line let you place a fly softly and keep it drifting naturally in small streams, where most trout actually live.
-
It packs down to almost nothing
A tenkara rod collapses to the size of a water bottle and weighs a few ounces. It lives in a backpack, a truck console, or a carry-on, ready whenever you pass good water.
-
It slows you down in the right way
One rod, one line, a small box of flies. You spend your time reading water and watching your fly instead of changing rigs.
How is it different from regularfly fishing?
In western fly fishing, the reel and the heavy fly line do the work of the cast, and you manage loose line constantly. In tenkara, the line is fixed to the rod tip at a set length. You cast with the rod, and the fight is direct, hand to fish, with nothing in between.
That fixed length is a feature, not a limit. It keeps you close to the water, fishing carefully and quietly, which is how you catch fish in small streams.
FOR EVERY ANGLER
Who is it for?
Beginners who want to catch trout without a season of lessons first. Experienced anglers who are tired of carrying everything they own. Backpackers and travelers who want a real fishing setup that weighs almost nothing. Anyone who likes the idea of fishing more and fussing with gear less.
