Why Fall is Prime Fishing Season

Fall fishing is the sweet spot when it comes to fishing.  Cooler water means that the trout are more active than those hot Summer days, the crowds thin out, and its hard to beat the scenery with that Fall foliage.  But the shift in weather also brings new challenges, so if you want to make the most of the season you might have to tweak your approach a little bit.

Here is a checklist to keep you fishing longer and catching more fish this Fall.

1. Take the right rod.
In the Fall, a lot of the creeks are low but the big rivers are wadeable.  So it opens up the potential for more current and bigger fish.  So I generally like to pack a rod like the Sawtooth that has some good length, a decent backbone if I get into bigger fish, but still super fun on smaller fish.

2. Adjust your fly box.
As the temperatures drop, the hatches change and so do a trouts diet.  Maybe a month or two ago a big ol stimulator pattern would entice a fish to eat on top, but that might not work during the Fall so be prepared.  Smaller dry flies and nymphs tend to work well this time of year, but for me, this where the Kebaris shine the most (it also doesn't hurt to have a few streamers handy just in case).

3. Refresh your line and tippet.
Fall is a good time to double check the little things.  Old tippet, frayed line, messy bag, etc.  I normally will spend 1-2 hours at some point in September just transitioning my gear from Summer to Fall.  Especially after all of the Summer fishing my fishing bag looks like an explosion went off in there.
(random business idea tip for someone out there, a service where you can send in all of your fishing gear and it gets perfectly organized and sent back to you)

4. Plan for shorter days.
With daylight fading early, I like to pack a headlamp, an extra layer, and just keep my setup pretty simple.  It gets dark quick, but there is this little period of time in between when its too dark to tie on a new fly, and too dark to see is so productive for.

Fall fishing doesn't last long.  Especially if you live in the mountains like I do.  But to me its the most rewarding and productive time of year for fishing.  So grab your pack, check your gear, and take advantage of the season.
