The Kokanee
(or land locked Sockeye Salmon)
This hat is unique because if you are a big Sockeye fishermen than it is a Sockeye, but if you are a Kokanee person it works that way as well.
Kokanee live their lives similar to a Sockeye Salmon except they live their entire life in freshwater. They will spawn in rivers and creeks and then migrate to a lake where they will feed and live until they are ready to return to their spawning grounds. At that point they turn bright red to spawn and finish off their lives.
Habitat - Kokanee can be found in many lakes in North America throughout Alaska, Western Canada, Washingon, Oregon, California and Idaho. And they have been introduced to many more states. There is a fairly robust stocking program of Kokanee throughout the US due to their status as a prized game fish in many lakes.
Conservation - Some species of Kokanee have struggled while others have thrived. Since they don't migrate to the ocean like Sockeye Salmon their conservation varies depending on what lake they are in and the conservation efforts around each individual Kokanee population.
